bike fitting

THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE BELIEVE A BIKE FIT IS JUST FOR THE COMPETITIVE CYCLIST OR ARE SIMPLY UNAWARE THAT THERE IS A BETTER, MORE COMFORTABLE AND SAFER WAY TO RIDE THEIR BIKES.

Anyone from the beginner/occasional bike rider through to the very experienced, high mileage cyclists and even bike racers are often seen squirming around on their saddles and putting themselves at risk of over-use injuries. To top it off they are also going slower and working harder than they need too!.

A combination of both Body Positional & Foot/Pedal Interface Fits which optimises all main contact points

As a certified BIKEFIT© bicycle fitter, we place a greater emphasis on the foot/pedal interface than we do saddle height! By acknowledging the foot’s inherent angle, and through the use of the patented BIKEFIT© Cleat & Heal Wedges along with correct arch supporting, we are able to connect your cycling shoe with the pedal more naturally. This achieves a more efficient and fluid movement whilst at the same time reducing the risk of injury. Our Fit system is not a numbers based bike fit, we use a variety of techniques to best fit the bike to person and his/her individual functional range of movement instead adjusting the bike and forcing the rider into a predetermined best average position.

The SHEDfit will have you riding in more comfort, with more efficiency and increased Power!

bikefit faq’s

In its simplest term it’s the process of adjusting your bike to fit your body instead of your body having to adapt to the bike. On all standard bikes, you have 5 main contact points between you and the bike – Hands, feet and bottom. In turn, we will look, analyse and adjust these contact points in order to create the most comfortable and efficient riding position.

We regularly find that many riders are happy to spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds on their bikes and their cycling gear but neglect to invest in a proper bike fit. A bike that is fitted to your body and riding style can significantly improve your efficiency, speed, enjoyment and, most importantly, help you to avoid and eradicate aches, pains, injuries and niggles.

IN OUR OPINION, IT’S BETTER TO SPEND LESS ON YOUR KIT BUT MORE ON HAVING AN EVIDENCE-BASED BIKE FIT WITH A PROFESSIONAL BIKE FITTER BEFORE YOU START ANY SIGNIFICANT TRAINING OR EMBARK ON A LONG RIDE.

Everyone is different….some of us have longer legs and shorter bodies, some of us have high arches or flat arches, some of us ride with different pressure on certain parts of the saddle and the majority of us cannot retain a good functional range of movement when the saddle is adjusted to the so-called optimal height when achieving a knee bend of 33 degrees! Although computer-based bike fits have their merits (i.e. methods such as Retul, Wattbike, Apex etc), they don’t take into account each person’s individualities and goals.

As a certified BIKEFIT© bicycle fitter, we place a greater emphasis on the foot/pedal interface than we do saddle height!

The SHEDfit will have you riding in more comfort, with more efficiency and increased Power!

Pre-fit interview to outline any variables or physical issues causing problems while you ride.

Evaluation of your stability, form and function both on and off the bike. Application of unique assessment and cleat/seat/bar adjustment methods with an emphasis on cleat/shoe and saddle/bar optimisation.

Diagnosis of injuries or diseases.

Chiropractic-type adjustments.

Cleaning/tuning/repair services to bicycles in need of attention. (We are not responsible for questionable equipment that fails during a fitting session)

New muscular recruitment patterns take time to settle in and feel solid. You are highly encouraged to come in with a 2-3 week window of easy riding after the fitting work to give your muscles and nervous system time to adapt to the changes. You will most likely experience one or more of the following:

New sensations through the whole body as your feet, pelvis, back and hands can wind up in much different positions than when you arrived.

Small ring efforts without hills at a heart rate of under 75% max for 2-3 weeks to give your body time to develop the new motor patterns required for the new position.

New balance sensations. (Adapting to these new balance sensations will require frequent riding without hard cornering, sprinting, long efforts and fast descents.)

Minor aches and pains caused by your body’s previous motor patterns attempting to function with the new position.

Your trust that I know what I am doing and that I WILL make improvements to how you feel on the bike.

You will commit to this process with me.

You will contact me with any questions or concerns as soon as possible.

You will follow my instructions and you WILL NOT make any adjustments to your bike without first discussing it with me.

You will do your best to follow the off-the-bike recommendations that I give you.

Basic Equipment: Bike(s), shoes, fresh cleats if available, any orthotic devices/insoles/foot beds you have, any cleat shims or wedges you currently use, cycling riding kit.

Accessories: Water bottle for hydration, snacks, Seat mast cutting guide or other tools/spacers/items specific to your bicycle.

Cycling kit, including jersey, bib, shorts, cycling socks.
